Challenge for Change is a national program that creates powerful, participatory media designed to activate social change.

About us

Challenge for Change (C4C) is a not-for-profit media organization founded in 2016. It is the brainchild of The MacMillan Family Foundation, Inspirit Foundation, and The National Film Board of Canada (NFB).

Inspired by the NFB/SNC’s community development project Challenge for Change, C4C is an independent non-partisan charitable organization that works to create greater inclusion and prosperity in Canada through media and arts.

We use the power of storytelling to create empathy, understanding and relationships required for individuals and communities to thrive. We produce media and support activities to build bridges through education and engagement, content creation and distribution.

We believe in the power of collaborations and work in partnership with foundations and philanthropists who wish to support the charitable activities of individuals, communities, non-profits and social purpose organizations, including Inspirit Foundation, McConnell Foundation, The Vancouver Community Foundation and The Trottier Family Foundation/La Fondation Familiale Trottier.

Our current focus is community journalism and educational and engagement activities for documentaries that support the public’s knowledge and appreciation of Canadian culture. To this end, we have worked with several non-profits, including The Discourse, to help La Converse’s focus on community journalism in Quebec, IndigiNews’ platform in BC, the Canadian Journalist of Colour RISE conference. We have also collaborated with Story Money Impact on Good Pitch Vancouver Virtual, THE POD and campaigns associated with The World is Bright.

Our mission

Through listening and the democratic power of the media, C4C will help build the country we want by strengthening relationships between people and communities.

We envision communities where people have the power to make change and create opportunity for themselves and others.

Guiding Principles

  • C4C is about deep, genuine listening.
  • C4C takes time to build relationships.
  • C4C is creating media for change with communities rather than about them.
  • Communities influence all aspects of C4C’s activities.
  • C4C listens to all Canadians with a special focus on youth, newcomers, and Indigenous peoples.
